Choosing a first instrument can be difficult. Indeed, when starting the clarinet, one may not necessarily be aware that there are several instrument sizes. These different sizes will influence the instrument's pitch (the tone of the instrument's sound). This difference, which might seem minor, actually has a significant impact on the instrument's use.

B-flat, C, E-flat: three sizes for three different audiences
The most popular model, due to its ubiquity, is the B-flat clarinet, favored since the technical improvements on the key system introduced by Theobald Boehm in the 1840s. This material is insensitive to changes in humidity and temperature, which can become problematic for clarinet players when they have to perform outdoors. It is also more affordable, yet still repairable in case of cracks or breakage, making it an excellent choice for beginners or enthusiasts who need to play in all circumstances.
