How to choose a clarinet for beginners?

SML Paris enables musicians to find the ideal instrument for their needs, with an optimal quality-to-price ratio!

Technically reliable, SML PARIS clarinets also possess a sound projection ease that I haven't found in equivalent competitor models.

Choosing a first instrument can be difficult. Indeed, when starting the clarinet, one may not necessarily be aware that there are several instrument sizes. These different sizes will influence the instrument's pitch (the tone of the instrument's sound). This difference, which might seem minor, actually has a significant impact on the instrument's use.

As the clarinet is a transposing instrument, each model will allow you to play different registers and scores.

So, which model to choose?

B-flat, C, E-flat: three sizes for three different audiences

The most popular model, due to its ubiquity, is the B-flat clarinet, favored since the technical improvements on the key system introduced by Theobald Boehm in the 1840s. This model is represented by the CL400 at SML PARIS. It is, in a way, the standard clarinet. This is the model taught in the majority of music schools and used in bands, brass bands, etc.

The C clarinet is a bit shorter. Highly appreciated by teachers and orchestra classes, it facilitates the learning of young musicians for ergonomic reasons, as the finger spacing is reduced, and harmonic reasons, as they are in unison with the flutes and help beginner musicians to orient themselves relative to each other. The CLC100 is available at SML PARIS.

The E-flat clarinet, one of the smallest in the orchestra, is mainly used to amplify the highs of the orchestra, and in very specific works, such as those of Mahler or Ravel. Although it is not the most sought-after of the available models, SML PARIS' CLE400 provides an affordable alternative to expensive models and allows you to acquire a second instrument without breaking the bank...

ABS Resin: Stability, Reliability, and Accessibility

Although clarinets have historically been made of wood (boxwood, then ebony, grenadilla, mopane, etc.), the arrival of ABS resin has been welcomed by musicians.

This material is insensitive to changes in humidity and temperature, which can become problematic for clarinet players when they have to perform outdoors. It is also more affordable, yet still repairable in case of cracks or breakage, making it an excellent choice for beginners or enthusiasts who need to play in all circumstances.
